Pair Skating

Pair Skating
There are two basic types of pair skating - a man and a lady or same sex (similiar pairs). Essentially the skaters are restricted by the types of activities - those with lifts, those with carries (adagio), and those without any lifts.

The individual free skating elements spins, and connecting moves can be performed in all types of pair skating. The skaters may perform mirror and side by side patterns of jumps, spins, and step sequences.

There are two different  Olympic figure skating disciplines that a couple (man and woman) can enter - Pairs Free Skating and Ice Dancing.

Pair skating consists of the following elements:
  • Individual technical elements performed solo as mirror or side by side
    • spins
    • jumps
    • footwork
  • Performance components
    • choreography
    • interpretation/artistic expression
    • skating skills
    • performance and execution
    • transitions
A strong background in free skating, especially multi-revolution jumps, is highly recommended for anyone wishing to skate competitive in qualifying pair events.
