child performed all of the required free skating elements, the panel
did not request a reskate, but she failed the test. Can you help me
understand why she did not pass?
There are quality considerations in performing the required elements that may not be obvious to a parent. Under and over rotated jumps, stepping out of landings, a touchdown of the free leg landing a jump, not holding the required position in a spin for the minimum number of rotations, total spin rotations short, not flying in a flying spin, not holding a spiral position for the minimum required time in position, etc.
The general quality of the skating performance may not be considered at the test level or violations of the “well balanced” program rule also are reasons why a free skating test may be retried.
Review the judges’ comments with the coach and ask the judges for clarification so you are clear on what the skater needs to do to prepare to pass the test.
