What happens if a skater includes illegal elements in a competition program?

In a competition, judges are required to take deductions for illegal elements. In addition, valuable time is wasted performing something that receives no value from the judges.

In a test situation, judges are not allowed to substitute illegal or more difficult elements for required elements. No deduction is taken, but the skater has wasted valuable time performing something that doesn’t count towards the passing mark.
